What we do

At Xigen we provide full service web development, from inception to hosting, and with over 60 years of combined experience in our dedicated development teams, we pride ourselves with having clean high quality code.

Whether your business needs an off-the shelf platform or a bespoke system, through meticulous planning, smooth delivery and our friendly ongoing support, we can guide you down the right path to suit your requirements.

Technologies

Using the latest technology and tools helps us ensure cross-browser compatibility and that your website works on an ever-growing number or smart devices. This keeps us and our partners at the forefront of web development.

We are experts in:

  • PHP
  • MySQL
  • Javascript
  • HTML5
  • CSS3
  • Bootstrap

We also have experience with industry leading platforms, including Magento, WordPress and Joomla, which can be used as a base for development. By having multiple technical options available we can give you the best possible bespoke solution to suit your business needs.

Why PHP?

We have looked at languages that implemented our core principles of MVC & Object-Relationship Modelling, and with PHP we have found the perfect balance. PHP is also the most popular language on the web and given the way it works so well with Apache/Nginx and MySQL sealed the deal.

PHP is fast to develop with and very scalable which enables us to evolve your website to fit market demands.

Responsible PHP Development

Long gone are the days where you can just throw up a PHP file on a live site and hope for the best (thank goodness).

With advances in version control & unit testing and continuous integration as well as a peer review & stringent release process we can ensure that our code is as robust as possible.

Agile

Agile PHP Development

We use SCRUM with our development teams in order to ensure that the entire development process runs as smoothly as possible whilst maintaining unrivaled flexibility for the product owner (you).

By working in sprints you are able to pick and choose which pieces of functionality you would like to include in the next release. If something becomes a major priority, no worries, we’ll get it into the next sprint for you meaning it will be ready for the next release.

Pair PHP
Programming

Whilst it is not something that we operate on a day-to-day basis we have the capacity to operate a pair programming policy on certain projects. This is usually requested when a project has a super-tight deadline or the task is an extremely complex one.

The main benefits of pair programming is a shorter programme with less defects being highlighted at the later QA stages.

Fast PHP Development

Our PHP developers are used to working under pressure, we thrive on it. Being an agency we know that every minute counts and that getting it right first time, every time is the key to getting software ready to go-live in as little time as possible.

By planning our projects correctly and asking the right questions we can ensure that we will achieve the best possible results for our customers. If you have a project that needs a super fast turnaround then get in touch and we’ll see how we can help.

Agile PHP Development Process

1. Brief Requirements / Update Backlog

During the briefing we take the requirements from our clients and work out how long each item will take and order them by priority. This list (the product backlog) is used to plan the next sprint.

2. Sprint Planning Meeting

After the requirements have been gathered we plan the work for the next sprint (sprint backlog), this usually lasts two weeks keeping software releases smaller and more often than a traditional approach.

3. Sprint / Daily Scrums

Once a sprint starts the we countdown the hours spent on each task vs the hours estimated, this gives us a sprint burndown which shows at a glance how well the developers are performing in their given tasks, allowing us to adjust resources depending in the progress made. Daily, stand-up, scrum meetings with all our developers allow us to avoid any potential pitfalls or blocking issues.

4. Release

Once the sprint is complete your PHP software will have been developed, QA tested and will be ready to release.

5. Sprint Review

After each sprint we review the features that have been developed with the client and discuss any changes to requirements that need to be considered.

6. Sprint Retrospective

After each sprint, a sprint retrospective is held in which lessons learnt from each sprint are shared amongst the team helping every developer learn from each other.
